Wild Boar BBQ (Annual Méchoui)

Reported by Andrew Travill

In a change up from the previous two years, this year’s summer dinning and wine matching event was held at the Elmdale Lawn Bowling Club, near the Civic Hospital. In addition to shifting to a more central venue, the menu featured spit-roasted boar in lieu of our traditional lamb.

Members and guests enjoyed fabulous weather for a fabulous event, with dining under the stars on the club deck.

While the venue and main course were new, the tradition of fine food, prepared by Chef Sylvain de Margerie and his assistant, was masterfully maintained. Guests enjoyed a glass of Cordorniu Pinot Noir Brut Rose Cava, while they conversed with old and new friends and observed Sylvain working his magic.

In addition to the boar, Chef Sylvain made a mildly spicy peach chutney. Arugula, Gemilli Pasta and Sweet Potato salads from Culinary Conspiracy accompanied the main course. For the wine accompaniment, we enjoyed a 2010

Ravenswood Estates Old Vines Zin, a 2010 Catena Malbec, and for those who prefer a white with their pork, a Dr. Fisher Ockfener Brockstein Riesling Spatlese. All of the wines paired beautifully with the boar, and we were very evenly split as to the best match.

The deserts, a Lemon Parfait Cake, White Chocolate Mousse Cake, Toffee Apple Cheesecake and a Raspberry Vanilla Charlotte were brilliantly matched with a Niagara Cab Franc Icewine. Regrettably, there was just enough to go around. Those of us who wanted to further ponder the match had to ration our pour.

A great thank you to Sylvain and his team, and to Jen, who once again got us all organized and fed.

As mentioned earlier, this year’s summer dinner was a bit of a departure from previous years, and yet in some ways a return to the event’s roots. The Board is very interested in how these changes have been received. Members are encouraged to contact any Board member with your suggestions for future events.
