Here’s hoping that you had a great summer and were able to visit some local wine regions. As you are aware, the summer proves to be a challenging time to run wine events, so your board has spent the summer planning what promises to be a great fall line-up.
I have an opportunity for some Guild members to volunteer Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the Novatel Hotel downtown for the Ottawa Wine Challenge. This is the event that rates all of the wines submitted to establish the Best of Show for this year’s Ottawa Food and Wine Festival. The judging is for most of the day. Volunteers are well treated, will be fed lunch and have a chance to view the judging first hand and may even have a chance to sample a few wines! The judging panel will include well-known wine critics and industry representatives. This opportunity is limited so the spots will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Please let me know if you are interested.
Don’t worry if you miss the opportunity to volunteer for the Ottawa Wine Challenge because we will be looking for volunteers for the Ottawa Food and Wine Festival in November. If you are interested, please reach out to me and let me know.
For our members that like aged wines, the Music and Beyond Wine Auction will be held September 16, 2013 at the Residence of the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany located at 290 Coltrin Road, Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa. Registration / Reception is at 6:30 p.m. with the live auction commencing at 7:00 p.m. The admission of $50 includes admission to the wine auction and $50 credit towards any purchases. To register either send an e-mail to email@example.com or telephone (613) 241-0777. Looks like a great selection of aged wines. The catalogue is available online at the Music and Beyond website.
Finally, it is with much sadness that I announce the passing of Guild Director Jacques de Montigny after losing his battle with cancer this summer. Jacques was a graduate of the Algonquin Sommelier program and had an active role in our newsletter as well as providing sound advice at our board meetings. Jacques was always an active volunteer at the Food and Wine Festival and had a deep knowledge and huge passion for wine. He will be sadly missed.
Cheers, Bill Ellis President
