A Word from Bill – December 2013

As 2013 winds down and we get ready for the vacation season, we look back at the year and hope that, as a Board of Directors, we have provided a full slate of tasting events that have kept your palate challenged. Our final event of the year “Festive Fizz”, always in high demand, is sold out and with that we will bid a fond farewell to the tasting season. Now it’s time for a well deserved break to enjoy some time with good wine and family and get ready for our first event of the year, namely our Guild Gala at the National Arts Centre in January. This will truly be a great way to celebrate 2014 as well as surviving the holiday season!

Here’s a note to all of our members that have previously graduated from the Sommelier Program at Algonquin College. Some Guild members that may have graduated from the program when only a few courses were available. This is a wonderful opportunity to upgrade the current education that you have. I am working with the college to determine how our members can enroll in classes that were not available previously, specifically the beer and spirits courses to upgrade their education. This will allow many of us to upgraded to the Ontario College Certificate that is now available. I will be providing you with more information on this in January.

For those interested in aged and vintage wine for the holidays, Music and Beyond is holding another auction on December 11, 2013 at the Museum of Nature. Lots of great wines available as always, here’s a link to the catalogue and the event.

Lastly, for all of you that have not had a chance to renew your membership for 2014, there is information in the newsletter and an Eventbrite link to make it easy for you. The Guild is a non-profit organization that caters to our members and runs events on a break even basis. The membership helps cover the cost of insurance and other incidentals required to run our organization. Please renew now to make sure that you get a front row seat at all of our events. Our schedule is set for the first half of 2014 and there will be some unique tastings as well as a few surprises.

On behalf of myself and your Board of Directors, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Hoping that you are able to share some fabulous wines with friends and family over the holidays!
