A Word from Bill – February 2014

I’m just back from the Guild?s first in a new series of tastings called the Century Club. We tasted four flights that included seven white and seven red wines. Single varietals included everything from Grillo and Grasevina to Monica, Aglianico and Xinomavro. Guild Director Alan Atkinson assembled these wines and provided educational information relating to where the grapes are grown, their attributes and finally where they might be used in a blend or on their own. All of the wines were under $20 and some provide a unique option for pairing with food. Move over Cabernet and Chardonnay; there are other exciting options! Take a look for our upcoming review of the event. A certificate of recognition will be awarded to those who join us to taste 100 varietals. If you missed the first one, sign up early for the next!

Hoping that you have come out of hibernation for Winterlude. Although I wish we had a few more wine- related events during this annual celebration, we are fortunate to have a number of restaurants running their own events showcasing food and wine. The Ontario event, Taste Ontario, that had been such an integral part of the festivities will now be held in the fall. The Wine Council notes, “We are not hosting a trade event in Ottawa this February. We moved this event to October this past fall.

Glad to hear of the interest and we are planning a trade tasting but not sure if the spring or fall.” Thanks to Dave Loan for sharing this with us. I’ll keep you posted of any updates that may come our way.

In the good news category, Vic Haradine has provided us with an update from the California Wine Show. Guild members receive a $5 discount on admission price. See the newsletter for further details.

We are busy planning other events including New Zealand. Besides the opportunity to hone your palate, we are also focused on insight about the grapes, the producer and the regions.

In order for us to provide you with the types of events that you are interested in, be on the lookout for a quick survey, which addresses everything from subject matter to the days of the week that we hold events and the venue we use. Please take a few minutes when you get the email and provide your feedback. It will ensure that we deliver what our membership needs.
