I’m just back from the Guild?s first in a new series of tastings called the Century Club. We tasted four flights that included seven white and seven red wines. Single varietals included everything from Grillo and Grasevina to Monica, Aglianico and Xinomavro. Guild Director Alan Atkinson assembled these wines and provided educational information relating to where the grapes are grown, their attributes and finally where they might be used in a blend or on their own. All of the wines were under $20 and some provide a unique option for pairing with food. Move over Cabernet and Chardonnay; there are other exciting options! Take a look for our upcoming review of the event. A certificate of recognition will be awarded to those who join us to taste 100 varietals. If you missed the first one, sign up early for the next!
Hoping that you have come out of hibernation for Winterlude. Although I wish we had a few more wine- related events during this annual celebration, we are fortunate to have a number of restaurants running their own events showcasing food and wine. The Ontario event, Taste Ontario, that had been such an integral part of the festivities will now be held in the fall. The Wine Council notes, “We are not hosting a trade event in Ottawa this February. We moved this event to October this past fall.
Glad to hear of the interest and we are planning a trade tasting but not sure if the spring or fall.” Thanks to Dave Loan for sharing this with us. I’ll keep you posted of any updates that may come our way.
