A Word From Bill — September 2014

Welcome back from the summer break. As we didn’t run any summer events, I’m hoping that you had a chance to enjoy wines from some of our local producers or not much further afield in Prince Edward County or Niagara Regions.

I have been pleasantly impressed by the quality of the wines offered in recent releases by the LCBO and the SAQ. There have been a great variety of wines offered from around the world, in short, a wine for every taste. With this in mind we look to the fall tasting season with enthusiasm, particularly with respect to our Vintage Pre-Release (VPR) tastings. Remember, the Guild is able to offer a tasting of these products prior to their release—a rare chance to taste before you buy and exclusive to our members.

In June, we held our AGM and I would like to thank the members who attended. At the meeting we bade farewell to two of our Directors, Larry Woods and Allan Martineau; thanks to both of you for your contribution to the Guild. Your tastings were enjoyed for their diversity and your presentation styles. Replacing our outgoing Directors are new Directors Marie- France Champagne and Matt Steeves. Both are enthusiastic recent graduates of the Algonquin program and bring fresh ideas to our team. We look forward to enjoying your tastings!

We have a full slate of events for the fall including some interesting VPRs, a Century Club tasting with small plates at Algonquin and some events for which we have been collecting wine. Please take a look at the schedule on the following pages and sign-up early for anything you’re interested in. Events have been selling out and have had waiting lists; sign up early so you’re not disappointed.

Now’s the time of year to start preparing for the Ottawa Food and Wine Festival and here’s my “call for volunteers”. The show will be held November 6-9, 2014, at the Ottawa Convention Centre. If you are interested in volunteering please reach out to me at bill.ellis@sommelierguild.com. For recent Algonquin grads, this is also a great opportunity to get any co-op hours that you may be missing.

Lastly, have any of you purchased or tried a Coravin? I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts, which I will include in a review in an upcoming newsletter. Please email me with any thoughts you’d like to share with our members.

See you at an upcoming event!

Cheers, Bill Ellis, President
