A Word from Bill – October 2014

With summer over and the fall upon us thoughts turn to the harvest for the 2014 growing year. This is a great time to visit a working winery and take a look at the harvest and crush process as well as having a chat with the owners and winemakers and getting their thoughts on this years production. Of course, the winemaker is at his busiest now, but it’s fun to watch the buzz of excitement at most facilities.

Jabulani and Domaine Perrault are practically in our backyard and not much further afield is the maturing, growing wine industry in Prince Edward County, which makes a nice day trip to picnic, sample and buy locally produced wines. Don’t forget about locally grown fruits and vegetables too. This is a great time of the year to eat fresh produce and support local business!

We sent out an email blast this week with regard to the Whiskey Ottawa event this weekend at the Ottawa Convention Centre. Guild members were offered a 50% discount on tickets. Thanks to Randy Fitzpatrick for thinking of us and making it happen. As a Guild member, you will receive more promotions. Watch the newsletter for more information in the months to come.

Details for the Ottawa Wine and Food Festival are being finalized. A couple weekends ago a number of Guild volunteers spent a day helping

out at the Ottawa Wine Challenge where the judges rated products that will be seen at the festival and selected the best of show in a number of categories. Thanks to Cynthia Mar and the crew of Guild members that helped out for the event.

I reached out to you last month to see how many members would like to volunteer at the Ottawa Wine and Food Festival and have been encouraged by a number of you contacting me to help out. At this point there will be a number of great Tutored Tastings, as well as a stage on the Main Tasting Floor that will focus on education relative to wine, beer and spirits. Guild members will be able to staff these locations, learn and most importantly have a fun weekend!

I will be in touch in the next week or so with those that have signed up. If if you are able to help please contact me at bill.ellis@sommelierguild.com.

There are lots of good events announced in the newsletter and there is still room at some. I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!

Cheers, Bill Ellis, President
